Garage Door Openers in Nanaimo

Same-day repairs, subject to technician availability, or a quiet new unit installed. You decide after the written quote.

When the opener quits, the door usually still works — it's just heavy, awkward and stuck on the wrong side of your plans. In Nanaimo we see the same handful of failures over and over: a motor that hums but won't lift, a drive gear ground to dust, a remote that only works from the driveway. None of them automatically means the opener is finished, and most are routine to put right.

When a repair stops making sense, we'll tell you plainly rather than nurse a tired motor along. New installs are LiftMaster units matched to the weight and daily use of your door, and each one leaves our hands with remotes paired and sensors aligned. Whatever make is hanging in your garage now, and wherever you are between the Cowichan Valley and the Comox Valley, we'll come and look at it.

How it works

  1. Step 1: Call

Phone or book online and describe the symptom: humming, clicking, lifting partway or nothing at all. That tells us which parts to load before the truck leaves the shop.

  2. Step 2: Full opener check

The technician runs the opener through a cycle, checks the motor, gears, sensors and door balance, and gives you a straight answer on whether the unit is worth keeping.

  3. Step 3: Repair or replace, your call

You get two written prices, one for the repair and one for a new opener, and the tools stay on the truck until you've picked one.

Brands we install

Tedford is a LiftMaster Authorized Dealer, so most of the new openers we hang in Nanaimo garages come from LiftMaster's residential line. That doesn't mean we turn other makes away. Our technicians regularly repair and program Chamberlain, Genie and Craftsman openers and carry common opener parts on the truck, so a service call on an older unit rarely needs a second trip.

  • LiftMaster — new installs (Authorized Dealer)
  • Chamberlain — repair, parts and programming
  • Genie — repair, parts and programming
  • Craftsman — repair, parts and programming

Belt, chain or wall-mount?

Chain-drive openers are the workhorse: dependable, economical and perfectly fine for a detached garage where a little noise doesn't matter. Belt-drive units run far quieter, which counts when a bedroom or living room sits above or beside the garage, as it does in many townhouses and newer homes. Wall-mount (jackshaft) openers bolt in beside the torsion shaft instead of hanging from the ceiling, leaving the overhead clear for storage or a high-lift track. We'll recommend one based on your door, your garage and how you use it.

  • Chain-drive: proven, budget-friendly, a bit louder
  • Belt-drive: quiet and smooth, ideal under living space
  • Wall-mount: no ceiling rail, keeps overhead space free

Smart openers

A smart opener joins your home Wi-Fi so the door answers to your phone wherever you happen to be. Forgot to close it on the way to the ferry? The app tells you and lets you shut it from the terminal. It can also let a courier or a neighbour in without handing out a keypad code, and it keeps a history of every open and close. Some models add a built-in camera for a live view of the garage. We set up the app, pair your devices and walk you through it before we leave.

Is it worth repairing an old garage door opener, or should I replace it?

A garage door opener is usually worth repairing when a single part, such as a drive gear, sensor, logic board or remote, has failed on an otherwise healthy unit.

Replacement is the better spend when the motor itself has burned out, parts are no longer made, the unit has no photo-eye sensors, or you've paid for several repairs in a few years. A Tedford technician checks the motor, gears, sensors and door balance, tells you plainly whether the unit is worth keeping, and gives you options and a written quote to approve before any work starts. If you decide to replace it, the estimate on a new opener is free, and the current offer takes $50 off a new residential LiftMaster opener with install.

How long does a garage door opener last?

A garage door opener commonly lasts around 10 to 15 years, though daily use, door balance and installation quality can shorten or stretch that considerably. The biggest factor is the door itself: an opener should only guide a well-balanced door, because the springs do the lifting. When a spring weakens, the motor strains on every cycle and wears out far sooner. A door used as the main entry to the house, cycling many times a day, also ages its opener faster than one opened twice a day. If yours has become slow, loud or hesitant, Tedford can check the door balance and the opener together before the motor fails outright.

Belt drive, chain drive or wall-mount: which garage door opener suits my garage?

Belt-drive openers are the quietest choice for garages under living space, chain-drive openers are durable and economical, and wall-mount openers keep the ceiling clear.

A chain drive is fine for a detached garage where a bit of noise doesn't matter. A steel-reinforced belt runs much more smoothly, which counts in townhouses and newer homes with a bedroom above the garage. A wall-mount, or jackshaft, opener bolts to the wall beside the door and turns the torsion bar directly, so it suits high ceilings, overhead storage or a car lift, but it needs a torsion-spring door. Tedford installs LiftMaster openers and recommends a drive type after seeing your door, ceiling and the rooms around the garage.

What is the quietest garage door opener for a garage under a bedroom?

The quietest setup for a garage under a bedroom is a belt-drive or wall-mount opener with a DC motor, paired with nylon rollers and a well-balanced door. DC motors start and stop softly instead of jolting the door, which removes much of the thump people hear upstairs. The opener is only part of the picture, though: worn steel rollers, dry hinges and loose hardware often make more noise than the motor does, and an unbalanced door makes any opener labour. When you book a quieter LiftMaster opener, ask Tedford to check the rollers, hinges and spring balance at the same visit so the whole source of the noise gets dealt with.

What horsepower garage door opener do I need?

Most single and double residential garage doors run well on a 1/2 or 3/4 horsepower opener, because balanced springs, not the motor, do the actual lifting. Heavier doors, such as wide insulated doubles, solid wood or carriage-house doors and oversized doors, benefit from a higher-rated unit with more reserve power. Many modern DC openers are rated in HPc (horsepower comparable) rather than true horsepower, so compare models within one brand rather than across brands. More horsepower won't fix a door that's hard to lift by hand; that points to a spring problem that needs attention first. Tedford matches the LiftMaster model to the weight and width of your door.

If my garage door won't move, how do I tell whether the opener or the door is at fault?

To tell whether a stuck garage door is an opener fault or a door fault, check the springs, then disconnect the opener with the door closed and try the door by hand.

Look above the door: a visible gap in a torsion spring means the door is too heavy to lift, so leave it closed and call. If the springs look whole, pull the red release cord with the door fully down and lift the door a little. If it lifts smoothly and feels light, the door is healthy and the problem is in the opener, often a stripped drive gear, a failed logic board or a dead motor. If it is heavy or binds, the door needs attention first. Check the manual lock bar too. Call Tedford to book a technician; most doors are fixed on the first visit.

Why does my garage door touch the floor and then reverse back up?

A garage door that touches the floor and then reverses usually has its opener's down-travel limit set too far, so the opener reads the floor as an obstruction.

This often shows up after a new bottom seal is fitted, a slab settles or ice builds up under the door, because the closed position has changed. The fix is to reset the opener's travel limit, and on newer LiftMaster openers that means running the programming sequence rather than turning a screw. Don't just raise the force setting to stop the reversing, since that weakens the safety reverse. If the door reverses partway down instead, start with the photo-eye checks on the Garage Door Repair page. Tedford can reset travel and force limits on a service call.

Why is my garage door opener beeping?

A garage door opener that beeps or chirps every so often usually has a battery backup unit warning that its battery is weak and needs replacing. Backup batteries wear out after a few years, and the opener keeps chirping until a new one is fitted; the battery's indicator light may also turn red or flash. A beep while the door closes on its own is different: that's the built-in warning from a timer-to-close or app-controlled close, alerting anyone nearby that the door is moving. If you're not sure which you're hearing, note when it happens and tell Tedford when you call. The model label on the motor unit helps identify the right replacement battery.

How do I open my garage door during a power outage?

During a power outage, open a garage door by pulling the red manual release cord to disconnect the opener, then lifting the door by hand, provided the springs are intact.

Do this with the door closed: pull the cord down and back, then lift by the handle. A well-balanced door should feel fairly light; if it feels extremely heavy, a spring may be broken, so leave it shut. Lock the door manually while the power is out, since the opener isn't holding it closed. When the power returns, run the opener and the trolley re-engages on most models. Island windstorms cause regular outages, so ask Tedford about LiftMaster openers with battery backup.

Can I open and close my garage door from my phone with myQ?

Many current LiftMaster openers have built-in Wi-Fi and work with the myQ app, which lets you open, close and check your garage door from your phone. The app shows whether the door is open, sends alerts and keeps a history of each open and close, and some models add a camera or timer-to-close. Basic app control has been free, while some extras have needed a paid plan, and smart-home integrations change over time, so ask Tedford what applies to the model you choose. The opener needs a reliable Wi-Fi signal in the garage; detached shops on acreages often need an extender. Some older openers can be made smart with an add-on hub rather than replaced.

Will a new remote or keypad work with my garage door opener?

A new remote or keypad only works with your garage door opener if it uses the same radio system; on LiftMaster openers, the learn button's colour tells you which. The learn button is on the motor unit, usually near the light cover or antenna. Yellow indicates Security+ 2.0, the current system, while purple, red-orange and green buttons belong to older systems that need matching remotes. Older in-car HomeLink buttons may need a compatibility adapter to pair with newer openers. If you've just bought a house, clearing the opener's memory and re-pairing your own remotes makes sure the previous owner's remotes stop working. Tedford can program remotes, keypads and HomeLink on a service call.

Is my old garage door opener still safe and secure?

An old garage door opener may be neither safe nor secure if it predates photo-eye sensors or uses fixed-code remotes, both common on units from before the mid-1990s. Openers made since the early 1990s reverse on contact and use photo-eyes near the floor; a unit without them should be replaced, especially in a home with children or pets. Fixed-code remotes, often set with small switches inside, send the same signal every time, which makes them easier to copy than modern rolling-code systems. Test the auto-reverse monthly by closing the door on a 2x4 laid flat. The 34-point safety check a Tedford technician runs on a service visit includes the opener's auto-reverse and sensors.

What kinds of LiftMaster openers does Tedford install?

It also repairs and replaces all types of openers, including chain-drive, belt-drive and smart Wi-Fi units. Features such as Wi-Fi control through myQ and battery backup depend on the model, and the technician recommends one to suit your door's weight and your garage layout.
