Garage Door Repair in Nanaimo
Same-day, subject to technician availability. Most doors are fixed on the first visit.
A garage door that won't open is more than an inconvenience — it's your car stuck inside, your house harder to secure and, with a broken spring, a real safety hazard. Our Nanaimo technicians carry the springs, cables, rollers and opener parts for the doors we see most on the Island, so the large majority of repairs are finished in a single visit.
Every repair starts with a full inspection of the door system, not just the part that failed. You get a clear explanation, then your options and pricing in writing to approve before any repair is done.

Why won't my garage door open even though I can hear the opener motor running?
A garage door that won't open while the opener motor runs usually has a disconnected trolley, a broken spring, stripped opener gears or a door jammed in its tracks. Start with the red emergency release cord: if it has been pulled, the opener runs without moving the door, and running the opener once with the door fully closed normally lets the trolley click back in.
If the door lifts a few centimetres and stops, or feels extremely heavy, a spring has probably broken. Stop pressing the button, because the opener can burn out or fray the cables trying to lift the full weight. A motor that hums without moving the chain or belt points to worn drive gears. Tedford diagnoses all of these on a repair visit and gives you an exact quote before fixing anything.
Why does my garage door go back up when I try to close it?
A garage door that reverses as it closes is usually reacting to its safety sensors, the two small photo-eyes mounted about 15 centimetres up on each side. If something blocks the beam, a lens is dirty or knocked out of line, or low winter sun shines into the receiving eye, the opener reverses.
Clear the doorway, wipe both lenses and adjust the brackets until both indicator lights glow steadily. If the sensors check out and the door turns back partway down, the door itself may be binding on a bent track, a seized roller or a stiff hinge, and the opener reverses because it feels the resistance. A door that reverses only after touching the floor is a different, opener-setting problem covered on the Garage Door Openers page. Never bypass the sensors; Tedford can diagnose the fault and replace worn sensors or hardware.
My garage door cable snapped or came off the drum. Can I still use the door?
A garage door with a snapped or loose lift cable should not be used, because one side is no longer supported and the door can drop or jam crooked. The steel cables run from the bottom corners of the door up to drums on the spring shaft, and each carries part of the door's weight. When one fails, the load shifts to the other side, and running the opener or lifting by hand can bend the track or bring the door down.
Unplug the opener, leave the door where it is and keep people, pets and cars clear. Cables are held under tension by the springs, so rewinding one onto its drum is a job for Tedford's technicians. A broken spring is a common reason a cable jumps, so the springs get checked too.
Why is my garage door crooked or lower on one side when it closes?
A crooked garage door usually means a lift cable has slipped or snapped, a spring on one side has failed, a roller has broken or a track is bent. Look at the bottom corners and above the door: a slack cable hanging loose, or a gap in one of the coiled springs, confirms the cause.
Stop using the door, because an uneven door can bind in its tracks and fall when it is pushed or pulled. Don't try to level it by loosening track bolts or turning the cable drums yourself. Tedford's technicians find which part failed, give you an exact quote and rebalance the door so it travels evenly on both sides. Common parts are carried on the truck, so most doors are fixed on the first visit.
My garage door came off its track. What should I do, and can I put it back myself?
A garage door that has come off its track should be left where it is, with the opener unplugged, because the door can twist further or fall if forced. Don't pull the emergency release while the door is open or hanging, don't hammer the track back into shape and don't stand underneath it.
Doors usually leave the track after a bump from a vehicle, a broken cable, a worn roller or a track bracket that has worked loose. A single roller that has popped out of an otherwise straight track can sometimes be eased back in, but if the door is crooked, a cable is slack or the track is bent, call Tedford. Off-track doors are a standard repair, and Tedford quotes the exact price before starting.
My garage door is stuck open. How do I secure my garage overnight?
If your garage door is stuck open, lock the door between the garage and the house, move valuables out of sight and call Tedford. Phones answered 24/7, so you can report the problem any time; explain that the door won't close and whether anything looks broken. Safety hazards and vehicles trapped in the garage are prioritised, subject to technician availability, and dispatch confirms an arrival window once booked.
Don't stand under the door or pull the emergency release while it is raised; if a spring or cable has broken, the door can come down without warning. Only lower it by hand if it moves smoothly and feels balanced. A pair of locking pliers clamped onto the track just below a roller can stop an open door from rolling down on its own, but it won't make the garage secure, so keep the house door locked until a technician can repair it.
What counts as a garage door emergency, and what can wait until regular hours?
An urgent garage door problem is anything that leaves your home unsecured, traps a vehicle you need, or leaves a heavy door hanging crooked or partly fallen. A door stuck open, a snapped cable with the door raised, a trapped car or a door knocked out of its tracks should be reported straight away: phones answered 24/7, and safety hazards and vehicles trapped in the garage are prioritised, subject to technician availability, and dispatch confirms an arrival window once booked. Technicians work regular hours, Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm.
A noisy door, slow travel, a remote with weak range or a door that reverses because of dirty sensors can usually wait for a regular booking. If you're not sure which category your problem falls into, call and describe what the door is doing, and keep everyone clear of it in the meantime.
Does Tedford do evening or weekend garage door repairs?
No. Tedford's technicians work regular hours, Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, and there is no after-hours repair service. Phones answered 24/7, so you can call at night or on a weekend to report a problem and get on the schedule.
Safety hazards and vehicles trapped in the garage are prioritised, subject to technician availability, and dispatch confirms an arrival window once booked. Whatever the repair, your technician inspects the door first and gives you pricing in writing to approve before any work starts. If the problem can safely wait, such as a noisy door or a slow opener, call Tedford or use Book Online to schedule a regular visit.
Which garage door noises mean a part needs repairing, not just lubricating?
Grinding, scraping, popping or a single loud bang usually mean a garage door part needs repairing, while a light squeak from hinges or rollers is often just a lubrication job. Squeaks that go away after a light spray of garage door lubricant on the hinges, roller bearings and springs were never a repair problem.
Grinding, rattling or a door that shakes and jerks as it moves points to rollers with flat spots or failed bearings, a misaligned track or an unbalanced spring. Scraping can mean a roller has left the track, and a bang from the garage often means a spring has broken. Steel rollers tend to wear out first, and sealed-bearing nylon rollers run noticeably quieter. Tedford replaces noisy rollers on a repair visit and can tell you whether the noise is an early sign of a spring or opener problem.
Can a dented garage door panel be replaced without buying a whole new door?
A dented garage door panel can often be replaced on its own, as long as the manufacturer still makes that model and only one or two sections are damaged. Shallow dents with no crease sometimes don't need a new section at all, but a sharp crease, torn metal or a dent that makes the door rub or bind in the track means the section should be replaced.
Older doors are harder, because discontinued styles and faded colours can make a new panel stand out. A door that sags in the middle often needs a reinforcing strut, or new sections if it is badly bowed. Tedford repairs bent panels and, as a Clopay Master Authorized Dealer, can check whether a matching Clopay section is still available.
Why won't my garage door work after the power comes back on?
A garage door that won't work after a power outage usually has an opener that is still disconnected from the door, a tripped breaker or outlet, or wall-control lock mode left on. If you pulled the red release cord during the outage, the trolley stays unhooked until you run the opener with the door fully closed or push the door gently until the trolley clicks back in.
Next, check that the opener's lights come on; if not, look for a tripped breaker or a reset button on the outlet. Some openers need their remotes re-paired or their travel limits relearned after a power surge, and a surge can also damage the logic board. If the motor runs but the door won't lift, a spring may have failed. Tedford can diagnose the opener and door together.
Should I repair or replace my garage door?
Repairing your garage door is usually the better value when the panels are sound and the problem is a spring, cable, roller, track or opener part. Replacement starts to make sense when several sections are damaged, the door is rusted through or rotting, matching panels are no longer made, or it's an old, uninsulated door you would like to upgrade anyway.
Age alone doesn't decide it: an older door with straight, solid sections can be well worth a new spring or cable, while a newer door with several crushed sections may not be. After inspecting the door, Tedford's technician gives you repair options in writing, and if a new door is the smarter choice, the current offer is $100 off a new residential door with install.
Will Tedford give me an exact quote before starting a garage door repair?
Yes. A technician inspects your door system, then gives you pricing and options in writing to approve before any repair is done. Because the price depends on what the technician finds, Tedford doesn't quote repairs over the phone; after inspecting the door, your technician explains what failed, what the repair involves and why.
The price depends on the part involved (spring, cable, roller, track or an opener component), the size and weight of the door, and whether other worn parts are worth fixing in the same visit. GST is added to all prices, and there is no trip fee. Nothing is replaced until you say yes. Current offer: $25 off any residential repair. Mention this offer when you call or book online.
Which garage door problems can I safely fix myself?
Homeowners can safely clean and realign the safety sensors, replace remote batteries, check the lock button on the wall control and lubricate hinges and rollers. Leave springs, cables, cable drums, bent track and the bottom brackets to a professional: those parts hold the door's weight under high tension, and a slip can cause serious injury.
Once a month, try a simple safety test: lay a 2x4 flat in the doorway and close the door. It should reverse as soon as it touches the object. If it doesn't, stop using the opener and book a repair with Tedford. For a once-a-year professional check, book a service visit; the Maintenance page explains what a technician looks at.
